Apply for Licensure

On January 1, 2025 the state of Minnesota passed the BCBA Lisencing Bill which requires anyone who wishes to practice applied behavior analysis and use the title of Behavior Analyst, to be licensed by the Minnesota Board of Psychology unless exempt under section 148.9987

How to Apply

Prior Requirements

Prior to applying for licensure:

 

1. Individuals must have current and active national certification as a board-certified behavior analyst issued by the certifying entity.

2. Has completed the equivalent requirements for certification by the certifying entity, including satisfactorily passing a psychometrically valid examination administered by a nationally accredited credentialing organization.

Submit College Transcripts

Order your official college transcripts from your university's website and send your official transcripts to psychology.board@state.mn.us

Request BACB Verification Letter

Go to the BACB website and request a verification letter.

Send this letter to psychology.board@state.mn.us

​

*Pay your invoice for your verification letter if notified. A link to the billing section can be found once you log into the BACB gateway.

Complete Background Check

You will receive an email from criminal.background.check@state.mn.us with directions on how to find a fingerprinting location, documents to fill out, and what forms to mail in. 

​

Tips:

  • Check with your local or county police department to set up a fingerprinting appointment.

  • Check with your fingerprinting source to see if they provide a FD-258 card or if you will need to provide one.

  • Mail your FD-258 card to:

Receive Your License

The Board of Psychology will review your application and supplementary documents.

If your application for licensure is approved you will be issued your Behavior Analyst License through your email.

What to Expect: Biennial License Renewal

What to know about your biennial license renewal:

  • Your license must be renewed every two years

  • A 60 day renewal notice will be mailed to your address and will include:

    • License renewal deadline​

    • Instructions on how to access the online application

    • The notice of fees

  • Renewal requirements include:

    • A complete and signed renewal application​

    • The license renewal fee

    •  Evidence to the board that the licensee holds a current and active national certification as a behavior analyst from the certifying entity.

  • The application and/or fee must be received or postmarked by the end of the day on which the license expires.​
